Mountain Pine Beetles-Mt. Rushmore

DSAF Mt. Rushmore Pine Beetle Marking Opportunity

The Dakotas Society of American Foresters (DSAF), in conjunction with Mt. Rushmore National Memorial, South Dakota Department of Ag, and South Dakota State University, will be hard at work on Saturday, March 5th, marking mountain pine beetle infested trees as part of an ongoing sanitation program within the 1,272 forest boundary of Mt. Rushmore National Memorial.

As many are aware, the current pine beetle epidemic is spreading rapidly across the Black Hills, killing trees on hundreds of thousands of acres. DSAF first shed light on the potential impacts of the epidemic on the Memorial’s legacy forest at their 2009 Fall Conference, pointing out the need to proactively manage the forest to fend off the tiny tree killer. Since then, DSAF has closely worked with the Memorial in implementing their forest management plan to save this legacy forest and preserve the landscape that makes Mt. Rushmore the success it is. Please email Carson at cengelskirger@hills.net if you would like to help out & for planning purposes. We will provide lunch and water.

Saturday, March 5th, marking crews will be combing the Memorial’s forest in search of infested trees where they will mark them for treatment in the near future.
